Sprout Social vs. Orbit: What You Actually Pay For

Sprout Social is one of the best-built products in this category. The interface is clean, the analytics are deep, the social listening is genuinely useful, and the support is good. None of that is in dispute.

The question for an agency is not whether Sprout is good. It is whether Sprout's pricing model matches how an agency makes money.

The per-seat problem

Sprout prices per user. For an in-house marketing team of four managing one brand, that is a sensible model — you pay for the people who use it, and the number of people is stable.

For an agency, the number of people who need access is not stable, and it is not small. You have yourself, your account manager, two coordinators, a designer who needs to see the calendar, and a contractor who writes captions three days a week. That is six seats before you have counted a single client.

Then a client asks for view access to their calendar. Then another one does.

Per-seat pricing puts you in the position of rationing access to your own team, which is a strange place to be. Agencies respond predictably: they share logins. Shared logins destroy attribution, make it impossible to scope a junior to specific clients, and become a real liability the first time a client's security review asks about them.

What Orbit charges for instead

Orbit prices per workspace — effectively, per client. Your team size does not change your bill. Add a coordinator, add a designer, add a contractor for a busy quarter, the number stays the same.

The practical effect is that you stop thinking about access as a cost. Everyone who should see the calendar sees the calendar. Clients get review links without consuming a seat. Permission tiers exist so a coordinator sees only their assigned clients, but that is a scoping decision, not a budget decision.

Where Sprout genuinely wins

Social listening. Sprout's listening and monitoring tools are significantly more capable. If you sell reputation management, brand monitoring, or competitive intelligence as a service line, that is a real product capability Orbit does not match.

Analytics depth. Sprout's reporting goes deeper, particularly on audience demographics and competitive benchmarking. If your clients are enterprise-adjacent and expect that depth, Sprout delivers it.

Inbox management. Sprout's unified inbox for comments and DMs across networks is more mature. Agencies who handle community management as a billable service should weigh this heavily.

Integrations. More CRM and helpdesk connections, which matters if social is one channel in a larger stack you already run.

If two or more of those describe your business, Sprout is likely the correct choice and per-seat pricing is the price of admission.

Where Orbit fits

Orbit is built for the agency whose core job is producing, approving, and publishing content across many clients on a schedule. That is a narrower job than Sprout addresses, and being narrower is the point — the tool optimizes for the loop you run fifty times a week.

Client approvals over a no-signup link. A calendar that shows every client at once. AI drafting inside the composer. Per-client pricing so growth does not tax you. Reporting that generates per client without assembly.

If your service is "we run their social," Orbit covers the loop. If your service is "we run their social and monitor their brand and manage their community and report against competitors," Sprout covers more of it.

The question that decides it

Count the people who need access to your social tooling — team, contractors, and any client who would benefit from a login. Multiply by Sprout's per-seat cost. Compare that to a per-client model at your current client count.

Then ask whether you use listening.

Those two numbers, in that order, will tell you which tool you are actually choosing between. Everything else in a feature comparison is a rounding error next to them.
